Operation Discovery at Abbott's diagnostics facility in Longford

Secondary school students in Longford and Sligo have the opportunity to visit Abbott for a hands-on day working with Abbott scientists to witness the fascinating world of science and discovery. More than 200 students in Longford and Sligo have participated in the programme since 2009.

Abbott Family Science in Dublin

Nearly 2,000 primary school students and their parents and teachers have taken part in Abbott Family Science. Led by Abbott employee volunteers, these fun and interactive events are increasing interest in science. A post-programme survey shows that participants are more than twice as likely to do hands-on science activities in their own home after participating in the programme.

Abbott’s Science Programmes for School Children

Abbott are big supporters of Ireland’s next generation of scientists through its Family Science programme and Operation Discovery programmes for primary and secondary school children respectively. These programmes developed by the Abbott Fund, see Abbott employees engage students through hands on experiences in science. To date, more than 180 Abbott volunteers have reached 1,500 students, parents and teachers at 18 schools across Ireland.

Partnerships

To engage more parents in their children’s science education, Abbott is partnering with Discover Science and Engineering to develop a new “At Home” section of the Discover Primary Science website.

Scifest is an annual festival of science, open to all second level students, which encourages a love of science through enquiry based learning. Abbott sponsors the “Runner Up Best Project Award” at Scifest events in Institutes of Technology around the country.

Abbott participates in several programmes with Engineers Ireland including National Engineers Week.

Abbott is pleased to be a Corporate Partner of Science Week. Abbott sites have participated in this national event for many years, hosting students for tours and careers talks. Abbott Family Science and Operation Discovery programmes also run annually during this week.
